Our name carries a dual significance: in classical music, an "alaap" is the soulful opening that sets the mood and explores the essence of a raga; more literally, it translates to "conversation" or "dialogue" across many South Asian languages. We embody both—acting as the introductory notes to a vibrant cultural journey and the spark for meaningful exchange.

At Alaap, we craft unique events designed to bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds who share a common interest in celebrating South Asian heritage. By showcasing the diversity of art, music, dance, literature, theatre, and cuisine, our goal is to highlight the creative and entrepreneurial spirit within the South Asian community in New York.

Furthermore, we are dedicated to supporting charitable causes by spotlighting non-profit organizations that have demonstrated significant social impact. By providing enriching experiences, we aim to forge a greater sense of community and foster meaningful relationships—both personal and professional—within the framework of shared cultural appreciation.

Noor Shams

Originally from Bangladesh, I grew up living across Dhaka, Moscow, Seoul, Abu Dhabi, Singapore & Los Angeles before moving to New York. I am a fundraising strategy consultant & donor organizer with two decades of experience working with non-profit and international development organizations.

Raised as a “third culture kid”, I have always sought experiences that connect people over shared cultural exchange, and bring that desire for community building to Alaap. In my personal life, I particularly enjoy cooking, hosting, and exploring culture and identity through food, and have created a storytelling platform, NoorieBoorie, through which I highlight Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and globally inspired cuisine.

Zarme Shahnawaz
